Jessica Carter...A Champion for Youth, Community, and Equity in Sports

Jessica Carter is a passionate advocate, leader, and changemaker whose work bridges the worlds of human services, sports, and youth development. A proud graduate of Charlottesville High School (Class of 2004) and Mary Baldwin University (Class of 2008), she earned her degree in Sociology and later completed her master’s at Liberty University.

Jessica has spent over 15 years serving children and families across Virginia through roles in correctional facilities, juvenile detention centers, public schools, and community-based organizations. Her mission has remained clear—create safe, empowering spaces for youth, especially those most at risk.

In 2020, she launched HER SPORTS, a nonprofit committed to breaking barriers for girls in athletics through holistic, mentorship-based programming. In 2022, she expanded her impact as co-owner of XtraMile, a therapeutic service provider supporting children, parents, and families in Fluvanna, Louisa, and Fredericksburg.

Jessica is also a celebrated athlete in her own right—Mary Baldwin University’s all-time leading scorer and a Hall of Fame inductee. She has coached at all levels—from youth recreation leagues to collegiate teams—demonstrating her deep commitment to developing confident, capable young athletes on and off the court.

Her greatest testament to character, however, may be her role as a dedicated caregiver to her mother for over 12 years. For her unwavering compassion and leadership, Jessica was honored as the 2024 Philanthropy Champion and received the 2025 Child Advocate Award from ReadyKids.

Whether mentoring, coaching, leading nonprofits, or building family-centered services, Jessica Carter continues to show up for her community—and lead by example every step of the way.

Marquez Mitchell of The Art Bar Co-Leads Flourish Youth Initiative

Marquez Mitchell: as the owner of The Art Bar Cville and Integrity Mentoring LLC, I am dedicated to making a meaningful impact in my community. Originally from York, Pennsylvania, I relocated to Charlottesville in 2016, bringing with me a passion for mental health that has been a driving force since I began my professional journey in 2009.

Inspired by the desire to create positive change, I teamed up with business partners to establish my companies, which are focused on serving our community and empowering the next generation.

I firmly believe in the principle of "be the change you want to see" and have devoted my life to giving back. I aim to provide young people with the support and opportunities that I wished for during my own formative years.
